backup.
How to backup your data
In today’s fast-paced world, it's essential to have a comprehensive backup strategy in place. With so many ways to lose data: media damage, human error/accidental deletion, cyberattacks, theft, rogue employees, natural disasters, etc; it is critical to understand how to backup your data properly.
Typically, music, photos, movies, critical data files, financial records, projects (the data you’ve spent so long creating and accumulating) are all stored in one place: your computer. But having all of your data in only one place is dangerous.
Losing data can be troublesome and heartbreaking for individuals, but for organizations, the repercussions can be irreversible. Many companies that experience severe data loss go out of business.
What is a good backup strategy
Ideally, we recommend a 3-2-1 backup strategy. This means:
- Keep 3 copies of your data
(one is your original copy, the other two are backups)
- Keep 2 copies on 2 different storage types
(NAS, external hard drives, flash memory, magnetic tapes, cloud, etc.)
- Keep 1 copy off-site
(outside of your location or company premises)
A good way to start is by having the original copy of your data, along with an external hard drive at your location, and an off-site cloud backup.
Why does this work
3: Storing the same data three times statistically minimizes the chances of data loss.
2: Using two different data storage technologies further reduces the probability of data loss occurring.
1: Keeping a backup in at least one other location is always recommended because if there is a fire, flood or other disaster, theft or cyber-attack at the principal site, not all backups will be lost.
What is a good backup system
There are many ways to backup your data. Even a manual copy, like saving a copy to an external drive, is some kind of backup. However, it is not very reliable, because you have to do it manually, repeatedly, and you have to manage things like deleting and renaming files. A good backup system automatically performs incremental backups so you don’t need to think about it or remember to do anything about it once the system is set up.
Conclusion
If you don't have your backup strategy in place, you should act immediately. Because all hard drives will eventually fail, it’s just a question of when and whether or not you’ll be prepared.
If you lost your data, Kotar Data Recovery can recover your data from any kind of media including HDD, SSD, RAID, server, USB drives, SD cards, mobile phones, etc.
